Hand-harvested from mid-slope vines that range from 30-40yrs old, at around 300 meters above sea level with a southeast aspect.
The grapes are destemmed and ferment spontaneously in old oak barrels
Aging also takes place in a mix of French, Croatian, and Hungarian used oak barrels and lasts for a minimum of 22 months
Unfiltered and Unfined
The Wine
Ewald Tscheppe makes some of the most distinctive and expressive white wines in his corner of Austria, the southern, mountainous region of Styria, famous for its Opok (limestone rich clay) soils. He biodynamically farms 8 hectares of vines and employs long-ageing in his wine-making techniques. Ewald took over the family winery in 2005 (making this his first vintage).
The 2005 retains an impressive amount of acidity to complement the rich, developed fruit and slightly oxidative tone. Weighty and full and long on the finish. A great expression of this winemaker and region.
